The Waterman Model J-5 "Magna-Wash"
backwash valve is a cast iron body, diaphragm activated, three-way combination
valve which is used in a media filtering system to control filtration/backwash
operational modes. The "normal" mode is the filtering function,
where the diaphragm is not activated (vented to atmosphere) allowing input
water pressure to push the diaphragm off its seat. Allowing the flow through
the valve into the media filter. At the same time the connecting shaft
in the diaphragm pulls the sealing cone into the seal ring thus closing
off the backwash port. The "activated" mode is the backwash
function. The diaphragm chamber is pressurized, causing simultaneous closing
of the flow into the valve (and to the filter tank) and opening the backwash
port. This allows flow from adjoining tanks to flow in reverse direction
through the sand media which carries filtered particles out of the media
through the backwash port and out of the system
